Symphony of Science
Apr 12th
I felt like a good introduction to my blog would be one of the things that set in motion my design to pursue science advocacy and education.
The Symphony of Science is a musical project of John Boswell. The overall idea is to stitch together bits of inspirational and profound quotes from many notable people (it features a lot of Carl Sagan) with a music backdrop. The voices are auto-tuned so your first time watching these, it’ll be a little weird. If your first reaction is “this is awkward, but the words are pretty intriguing”, don’t worry I had that too. After letting the bits and clips of some of the best science has to offer settle in your head, it’ll all start to sound very melodic. I got interested in this when a friend of mine told me he couldn’t stop listening and had this song on repeat all day (the first one). I felt awash with a sense of profound interest in the words that I investigated more thoroughly and discovered Carl Sagan. After learning he did “Cosmos” I immediately tracked it down and me and my girlfriend watched the entire series (it’s available in it’s entirety free online). I was floored by Sagan’s approach to teaching science and the vast wonder of the cosmos. It has inspired me to take an active interest in science, its role in our world, and the majesty of the cosmos. There is no real ‘order’ to these songs, but I get the sense that his music style has matured with each song.
